ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

The walk to the sites (1 mile - 1.5km to the Stone Age tomb; the Bronze Age site is around half way) is on a farm road and grass paths. Some wet weather clothing and boots can be borrowed from the Visitor Centre.

  • Permission for vehicle access to sites may be possible in special circumstances, depending on ground conditions.
  • Dogs on leads are welcome.

With the extra interpretation and hospitality supplied in the Centre, visitors who are unable to access the sites assure us they nevertheless have a most enjoyable experience.

GIFT SHOP

  • Great selection of gifts, many made here in Orkney.
  • The gift shop offers a small selection of light refreshments: hot drinks - filter coffee, tea and chocolate treats, cold drinks, confectionery and Orkney ice cream.

ENTERING THE ‘TOMB’

The passageway into the Tomb is 28” (70 cm) wide and 33” (85 cm) high. The quickest option is to crawl along the 3 metre entrance. The roof is 3 metres high with skylights providing light.

Alternatively, many visitors have a great time using the ingenious trolley! For anyone with a fear of enclosed spaces, the trick is to reverse in whilst keeping your eye on the horizon.

THE CLIFF TOP WALK & WILD FLOWERS

The scenery and wild flowers along the cliff walk are impressive. This is a wonderful example of maritime heath, which is now rare in Britain. Other wildlife can include butterflies, a large variety of birds as well as common and grey seals. The circular tour (walking) takes around 1 hour. There are a few seats along the route.

For a relaxed visit, allow 1½ – 2 hours to enjoy the interpretation and tour the sites.
